Details of Obama's proposals for more paid sick, parental and family leave for workers

President Barack Obama is making a renewed push to win paid sick, parental and family leave for workers.

He's calling on Congress, states and cities to pass measures to let millions of private-sector workers earn a modest amount of paid sick time. He'll also ask Congress for more than $2 billion to help states create paid family and medical leave programs. Obama also wants to provide federal workers with additional paid leave.

Here are details of Obama's proposals, as described by the White House:

PAID SICK LEAVE:

— Call on the newly Republican-controlled Congress to pass the Healthy Families Act, which would allow workers to earn up to seven days of paid sick leave to care for themselves or a sick family member, obtain preventive care or address domestic violence situations. Workers would earn an hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours they work.

— Encourage states and cities to pass similar paid sick leave laws. Some already have.

PAID FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE:

— Seek $2.2 billion in funding from Congress to reimburse up to five states for three years for the administrative costs and a portion of the actual costs of implementing paid family and medical leave programs. California, New Jersey and Rhode Island have paid family and medical leave programs. Details on how Obama would raise the money will be released in a few weeks.

— Propose legislation to provide paid family and medical leave for federal workers. These workers receive paid sick leave and vacation time, but no paid time off specifically for the birth, adoption or foster placement of a child.

— Direct federal agencies to advance six weeks of paid sick leave that federal workers could use as paid family leave. Workers would have to pay back the sick leave over time.
