Connecticut firm locates operation in New York, taking up offer to avoid taxes for 10 years

A tax deal touted by New York to lure new business has netted at least one Connecticut company.

New York is airing ads for its StartupNY program in Connecticut about relocating business and snagged a Norwalk company.

Hearst Connecticut Media reports (http://bit.ly/1y3E2PO ) that Datto, a privately-held data backup service provider, established a 15,000-square-foot facility at the Rochester Institute of Technology where the company's chief executive, Austin McChord, studied.

He said his company required a backup site outside Connecticut and the New York offer had no bearing on Datto's Norwalk workforce of nearly 300. But he said the StartupNY offer was effective in recruiting employees who do not have to pay income tax for a decade.
