Committee OKs merger between Stony Brook University Hospital and Southampton Hospital

A merger between Stony Brook University Hospital and Southampton Hospital has been unanimously approved by a SUNY trustees committee.

Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/1FPFZ6F ) say the vote came on Monday. The full 18-member board plans to vote on the agreement in Albany Tuesday.

The deal must be approved by various state agencies, including the state Department of Health.

Under the agreement, Southampton would lease its facilities to Stony Brook. Southampton would retain its board of directors. Its union employees would remain in their current union and 25 of Southampton's 125 beds would be transferred to Stony Brook.

The East End's two other hospitals, Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead and Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, remain in talks with Stony Brook and North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System about possible mergers.
