Carnival aims to offer new Cuba cruise from Miami next year as a cultural exchange trip

The world's largest cruise company could be heading to Havana.

Carnival Corp. says it could become the first American cruise company to visit Cuba since the 1960 trade embargo when it offers trips from Miami to the Caribbean island nation starting in May, pending approval from the Cuban government.

The trips will be through its new brand, fathom, which focuses on trips where passengers do volunteer work. Despite the historic thaw in relations between the U.S. and Cuba, Americans still can't vacation in Cuba but must go there as part of an approved cultural or humanitarian trip, unless they have family on the island.

Carnival is expecting high demand for the voyages. Prices start at $2,990 per person plus taxes and port fees. .
