Biopharmaceutical company AbbVie announced plans for $30 million expansion in Puerto Rico

U.S. biopharmaceutical company AbbVie is planning a $30 million expansion at one of its three plants in Puerto Rico.

Government officials say in a statement issued Wednesday that the Chicago-based company will expand its facilities in the north coastal town of Barceloneta.

AbbVie has three plants in Puerto Rico that manufacture products related to immunology, virology and metabolic disorders.

The announcement comes as the U.S. territory seeks to strengthen and diversify its manufacturing base amid an eight-year recession.
