AT&T says 911 service, phones restored after burst steam pipe causes scattered outages in Ohio

Scattered 911 and phone service outages in northeastern Ohio caused by a burst steam pipe in an AT&T switching office have been resolved, the company said Wednesday.

All services affected by the problem a day earlier were restored by Wednesday afternoon, AT&T spokeswoman Holly Hollingsworth said.

Customers in the Akron area may have experienced issues with wireless and landline services following the Tuesday night incident, she said.

Media reports said Columbiana, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Stark and Summit counties were among the places having problems. The city of Akron said Wednesday that residents may have trouble calling city numbers and accessing city websites.

The University of Akron, Kent State University, Akron General Medical Center and Akron Children's Hospital were among those that lost phone service, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

Hollingsworth said the company apologies for the inconvenience.
