Asked About Trump Shutdown Tweet, Ryan Says He Shares Budget 'frustration'
House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday he shares President Donald Trump's frustrations over the Congressional budgeting process. Asked if he agreed with a Trump tweet that the country "needs a good shutdown" so that Republicans can achieve their objectives, Ryan replied: "I share the president's frustration." Ryan noted that all spending bills must be bipartisan in order to receive 60 votes in the Senate. The speaker said Congress has "a long ways to go between now and September" when spending for the next fiscal year must be set. There will be a debate about funding the Trump plan to build a wall along the Mexican border this summer, he said. The speaker said he feels "very good with the wins we got" in the bipartisan spending compromise to keep the government open for the next five months. "There is a lot of good conservative wins here," Ryan said.
