Arizona sues General Motors over delayed safety recalls, seeks potentially billions in fines

Arizona's attorney general is suing General Motors and seeking potentially billions of dollars in fines against the auto giant for failing to recall millions of cars and trucks that had safety defects it didn't disclose for years.

Attorney General Tom Horne said Thursday that he's suing under the state's consumer fraud laws and seeking a $10,000 fine for each of the hundreds of thousands of defective vehicles sold in Arizona.

Horne acted independently of 48 states jointly investigating GM. Horne says he decided to move ahead because it was in the best interest of Arizonans.

GM says it's committed to setting a new industry standard for safety and proactively recalling vehicles when it finds a defect. The company says it hasn't read the complaint and can't comment on it yet.
