After chaotic year, critics praise superintendent of schools in Newark, New Jersey

Critics of the policies of the new superintendent in New Jersey's largest city say they're willing to give him a chance a year after schools opened with protests.

There's been praise this week for the early work of Newark schools Superintendent Christopher Cerf.

The former state education commissioner was nominated in June by Gov. Chris Christie after Cami Anderson left following four contentious years overseeing a district's transformation efforts aided by a $100 million donation from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Cerf unveiled a plan Wednesday to give each district teacher $100 to spend on supplies and $7,500 for principals.

The $750,000 for the program came from the Foundation for Newark's Future, which was set up to distribute Zuckerberg's 2010 donation to improve education in Newark.
