6 NJ towns still waiting for Meadowlands hotel surcharge revenue due May 15

Six New Jersey towns are still waiting for their shares of about $2.5 million in revenue from surcharges on hotel rooms near the Meadowlands.

The Record reports (http://bit.ly/1IXokuZ ) East Rutherford, North Arlington, Ridgefield, Rutherford, Jersey City and Kearny were supposed to receive the payments May 15.

The 3-percent surcharge went into effect in February when Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill giving the state's Sports and Exposition Authority planning and development oversight in the 30-square-mile Meadowlands District.

It replaced a controversial tax-sharing arrangement.

Town officials and hotel operators are upset with the confusion over the surcharge. The owners of a Hilton Homewood Suites collected about $25,000 in surcharges only to be told the hotel was located outside the Meadowlands District.

Additional installments are due Aug. 15 and Nov. 15.
