175 photos collected by mutual fund guru Howard Stein going to auction; estimate $13M to $20M
A selection of photographs amassed by the late mutual fund guru Howard Stein is going on the auction block.
Sotheby's says the pre-sale estimate of $13 million to $20 million for the 175 works is the highest ever for a photographs auction. The collection ranges from daguerreotypes (duh-GEHR'-uh-typs) to contemporary images.
The works are being sold Thursday by the nonprofit Joy of Giving Something. The group supports photographic arts and arts education. It was founded by Stein, a former CEO of Dreyfus Corp. who died in 2011.
The images represent some of the major giants in photography. They include Walker Evans, Irving Penn and Edward Weston. Contemporary photographers include Cindy Sherman and Adam Fuss.
The highest estimate, $400,000 to $600,000, is for Alfred Stieglitz's (STEEG'-lihtz-uhz) "Out of Window" from 1915.
