Skype Won't Rule Out Attack as Cause for Crash: Report

Skype officials have not ruled out a "malicious attack" as the cause for the crash that has disabled the internet calling site for more than a day, tech website TechCrunch reported Thursday.

Skype service went down Wednesday and was not yet back at full speed Thursday afternoon. Skype CEO Tony Bates attributed the problem to the failure of "a number of" supernodes due to a software issue, which the company said it is still working to resolve.

A supernode is a proxy server that manages data flow and connections for users of social networking and communications websites like Skype.

Bates said they had returned service to about 80 percent of users.

To apologize for its massive service outage, Bates said the company will offer users free credits for calling and video chatting.
