China To Allow Facebook, Other Banned Sites For APEC: Report

MarketWatch Pulse

China plans to allow limited access to Facebook , BBC News and other banned websites when foreign leaders gather for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit on Nov. 10-11, Singapore's Chinese-language Lianhe Zaobao newspaper reported on its website Wednesday. While it described the access as "extremely limited," affecting only the summit venue and press center, a separate report in Want China Times said it would be the first such move by China for an international event of this type. Meanwhile, the English-language Nanfang reported last week that government workers in Beijing had been furloughed for the summit to cut down on traffic and smog, an action last taken for the Beijing Summer Olympic Games six years ago. The Nanfang added that workers will be required to make up the lost days by coming in on subsequent weekends.
