Grads need to learn how to stand out from the pool of candidates in their job hunt. Here are tips from motivation expert Michael Provitera on how grads can grab employers’ attention and land a full-time job.
Know the Industry
Keep up to date with current events and the last news in the industry and how they relate to the position you are applying for so you can hold a steady, knowledgeable conversation with the interviewer.
Be Your Own Image Consultant
Not only do you need to look the part, you need to be able to sell your strengths. Provitera advises preparing a “30-second commercial” that details your best qualifications and experiences and how they apply to the position.
Track Your Progress
Most grads are not going to have an extensive work background, but that’s OK. Provitera recommends demonstrating how your academic success and college interests relate to the job and make you a strong candidate.
Be a Storyteller
Prepare and practice telling a story or two that highlight your leadership skills and how you helped motivate others to achieve their goals. (Reuters)
Do Your Homework
Show the interviewer you’ve done your research by showing how your skills are a match for the responsibilities of the open position.
