At No. 5 on the list of biggest ice cream consumers, Denmark residents ate an average of 14.8 pints in 2011. In nearby Britain, the average was 12.7 pints per person.

4. Sweden
Like its neighbors in Denmark, Sweden has a sweet spot for ice cream. The average person living in Sweden consumed 16.9 pints of ice cream in 2011.

3. Norway
Norway is the third of the Scandinavian nations to appear on this list, with the average Norwegian eating 21.6 pints of ice cream in 2011. It’s also the country where people spend the most on ice cream – $53.56 per person a year, on average.

2. Australia
Australia is the only country of the group that’s in the Southern hemisphere and the second-largest consumer of ice cream across the globe. The average consumer ate 21.8 pints of ice cream in 2011.

1. U.S.
The average American consumed 35.9 pints of ice cream in 2011, equivalent to almost 4-1/2 gallons. Mintel says sales of ice cream and other frozen novelties in the U.S. totaled $10.7 billion in 2011 and will reach $12.7 billion in the next five years.
