Shares of telecommunications companies rose amid optimism ahead of earnings season.

Weakness in demand for Apple's iPhone 8 smartphone could take the pressure off carriers AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile US and Sprint, who would otherwise spend their earnings calls talking about price cuts to lure the smartphone buyers, according to an analyst at brokerage BTIG Research.
