Most Expensive Dorms for 2010-2011 School Year

While rising tuition prices dominate headlines, the price of room and board is also steadily increasing. According to Campus Grotto, the average yearly cost of a dorm room at public universities is $8,535 and $9,700 at private universities. Check out the most expensive dorm prices for a standard double room for the 2010-2011 school year, according to Campus Grotto.

Eugene Lang College (The New School), New York, NY With only 900 students and an enormous facility located between Union Square and Washington Square Park in New York City, it’s no wonder this school is included on the list of the most expensive dorms. The cost of a freshman dorm is steep, especially in the 13th Street Residence, where a double room will run $13,590 a year, according to Campus Grotto. University of California (Berkeley), Berkeley, CA Set in the picturesque Bay Area, the University of California at Berkeley boasts a 1,232 acre campus along with some seriously-high campus living costs. Suffolk University, Boston, MA Entering its second century in 2006, Suffolk University has grown from a one-room school to a higher-academic institution with 16 buildings on historic Beacon Hill and throughout downtown Boston and campuses throughout the world. Some of its state-side dorms offer breathing-taking views of the city and every dorm includes a dining hall, computer lab and recreational room. Fordham University (Lincoln Center), New York, NY Set in the Upper West Side in Manhattan, the school’s Lincoln Center dorm called McMahon Hall is home to more than 740 undergraduates and 140 law students. If you like your personal space and you are a freshman, you are out of luck--the school only offers double and triple rooms for in-coming students. Fordham University (Rose Hill), New York, NY The independent Catholic institution’s main campus is located in the Bronx, which has 10 dorms for freshmen and upperclassmen in addition to off-campus facilities. University of California, (Santa Cruz), Santa Cruz, CA This public institution set in the Monterey Bay area among the looming redwoods offers housing based on students’ interests including outdoor recreation, sustainable living, and spirituality and faith. For students yearning to be more in touch with nature, the school has an RV park complete with bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities. St. John’s University, New York, NY This Catholic university has park-like campuses and residence halls in Queens, Staten Island, and a tower in Manhattan. The 10-story tower provides students with state of the art features including 24-hour concierge service, athletic facilities, and wireless Internet. Every dorm also gives out free or discounted tickets to major NYC events, but all this comes with a hefty price tag, according to Campus Grotto, students shell out $14,000 for room and board. Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY Outside the hustle and bustle of NYC (about 30 minutes away), Manhattanville College sits on 100 acres in Westchester County, N.Y and has four residence halls. Spellman Hall serves as home to freshmen and is co-ed by room, meaning male and female students can live next door to each other instead of traditionally being separated by floors or wings. Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY This small, co-ed liberal arts college’s campus has a plethora of different residents for students to live in. Nearly 90% of the students live on campus in co-ed or single sex dorms, apartments, or town houses. And according to Campus Grotto, students pay $13,820 a year for room and board. Pace University, New York, NY With locations in the Big Apple, Westchester County and White Plains, this private metropolitan university has nearly 13,500 students, and houses 1,800 students on its New York City campus. The Manhattan dorms, Maria Tower, Fulton Hall, and 55 John Street, offer residents proximity to classes, the cafeteria and the library and come equipped with high-speed Internet, cable, and laundry facilities.
