Small Businses Spotlight: Notnu Shop

Who: Whitney Strouse @Notnushop

What: An online thrift store

Where: Los Angeles, Calif.

When: May 2012

How:  Strouse said she has always enjoyed thrift shopping, and after graduating college in May and finding herself in a poor job market, she set out to make her hobby a full-time job.

She curates her clothes from donations, shopping on her own, and even her closet. She said the site aims to be more like a boutique shop  with lower prices.

“I do know there is a large number of people who don’t really enjoy searching for items,” she said. “I am usually in the bin at the bottom, fighting with people [in thrift stores] to get stuff, so I try to get the best of the best, and get everything.”

Quote from the owner: “My prices are pretty low, and I try to have a hip, more upscale selection, toward a boutique type of thrift store,” she said. “But I’m not going to pay $45 for an old shirt.”
