Small Business of the Day: Saky Sacks

Who: Rupa Wickrama, 55, @sakysacks

What: Eco-friendly bags

When: March 2010

How: Wickrama has worked in the apparel industry her entire life and was looking for something new and different to branch out into.

"I noticed women using grocery bags as an extra tote," she said, "There were a lot of inexpensive, reusable bags out there, but I couldn't find anything stylish or fashion-forward. Anything I found looked like grandma's curtains."

She began researching materials and launched her line soon after. All bags retail for between $20 and $25 and are machine washable.

Where: Redmond, Wash.

Biggest lesson learned from a customer: "Customers are looking for something unique and different," Wickrama said. "Be original and don't be afraid to take risks."
