Volvo plans to launch a pilot program this month in the San Francisco Bay area to test the idea. Volvo will invite 300 owners of XC90 SUVs and S90 sedans to participate, giving them the ability to order services like remote fuel delivery, valet car cleaning, and maintenance from their phones.
Authorized providers offering these services will get a one-time-use digital key, which is location- and time-specific, Volvo explained. When services are complete, the car will be locked and the digital key will expire. The car can either be returned to where its owner left it or delivered to a completely new location at the person's request.
"Volvo Concierge Services will mean that you never have to stand out in the rain to fill your car again," Volvo Car USA President and CEO Lex Kerssemakers said in a statement. "At Volvo Cars our mission is to make life less complicated, and this is a great example of how in-car technology can be used to deliver this."
You can, for instance, order a tank refill, car wash, or maintenance while you're working, sleeping, or traveling. Volvo will provide these services will the help of partners like on-demand gas startup Filld. The company plans to add even more services in the future.
