Facebook is reportedly looking into designing its own chips
Facebook is forming a team to design its own chips, following a similar trend from other big tech giants, including Apple, that want to loosen its ties to big chipmakers.
Bloomberg reports that the social media giant is currently hiring a manager to build an “end-to-end SoC/ASIC, firmware and driver development organization,” which signals an interest in designing its own semiconductors.
While the effort is still in its early stages, having its own chips will lower its dependence on big chipmakers such as Intel Corp. and Qualcomm Inc, and it could help the company power more hardware devices, artificial intelligence software and servers in its data centers.
Both Apple and Alphabet’s Google have developed its own chips in recent years.
A spokesperson for Facebook did not immediately respond to FOX Business’ request for comment.
