Evolution of the BlackBerry

Here is a look at BlackBerry devices through the years.

BlackBerry 7290 One of the earlier BlackBerry devices with a color screen, the 7290 was announced in 2004 and used an  LED backlight for better screen quality. (REUTERS)

BlackBerry Pearl 9100 The now-discontinued Pearl was a narrower BlackBerry, notably featuring a much smaller keyboard than other RIM devices. The Pearl was first sold in 2006. (Research In Motion)

BlackBerry Curve 8300 The Curve, first sold in 2007, featured BlackBerry’s trackball for navigation, as well as features now common for smartphones: a camera, Bluetooth, expandable storage and a media player. The first Wi-Fi BlackBerry was the 8820, also announced in 2007. (Research In Motion)

BlackBerry Bold The Bold was also introduced in 2008, featuring a different form factor and bigger keyboard compared to other RIM phones. The device also distinguished itself with a leather back cover. RIM later released a version of the Bold that had a touchscreen display in addition to a keyboard. (REUTERS)

BlackBerry Storm RIM’s first touchscreen device, the Storm was also the first BlackBerry that didn’t have a keyboard. The phone competed with Apple’s iPhone and other touchscreen phones, like the Palm Pre, when it was released in 2008. (Research In Motion)

BlackBerry Torch 9800 The Torch, unveiled in 2010, featured both a sliding touchscreen and full-sized keyboard. The design allowed for a larger screen, 3.2 inches. (REUTERS)

BlackBerry Style 9670 Sprint carried the Style, a flip phone with a full-sized keyboard, beginning in 2010. It was the second phone from RIM to ship with BlackBerry OS 6. (Research In Motion)

BlackBerry Torch 9860 The latest version of the Torch got rid of the sliding keyboard and went with a full touchscreen. It runs BlackBerry OS 7. (REUTERS)

BlackBerry Z10 The newest BlackBerry smartphones, unveiled Wednesday, Jan. 30, run a revamped operating system, BlackBerry 10. Both phones have 1.5 Ghz dual core processors, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and expandable memory card slots. The Z10 sports a 4.2-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1280-by-768. BlackBerry Q10 The Q10 features a 3.1-inch, 720-by-720 Super AMOLED display and a physical keyboard. BlackBerry said the two devices are expected to be available in the U.S. in March. FBN’s Shibani Joshi talked to Applico CEO Alex Moazed about BlackBerry 10 apps. (REUTERS)

RIMM Stock Chart Shares of Research in Motion, which will now trade as BlackBerry with the Nasdaq ticker BBRY, are up more than 20% this year. However, the stock has steadily declined since 2011 as the company has lost ground to competitors.
