Even the Wine Industry is Going Green
As I continue on my journey to learn about wine, I often hear words and phrases like organic and sustainably-farmed .
It seems the wine industry is going green too.
So much so, that wine shops across the country are opening with an organic focus.
Like Wine Geeks Armonk. Its a wine shop specializing in artisanal producers with an emphasis on organic and sustainably-farmed vineyards.
Located in Armonk, NY, owners Derek and Carol Todd, found a vacant vintage gas station and re-designed it a rustic-industrial style. The duo hand pick every wine in the shop, and can tell you exactly what you need to know about any of them. They even have a $15 and Under table offering strong value on a wide variety of fine wines.
The Todds tell me that wines that come from sustainably-farmed, organic, or even biodynamic vineyards do not taste any different from their conventional brethen.

What is your death row wine?
Derek: An older Austrian Gruner Veltliner (from a producer in the Wachau region like Nikolaihof or Nigl)
Carol: A Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer from Alsace
What region produces the best wine?
Thats like trying to choose between your babies. And its SO subjective. There are great wines being produced all over the world, and theyre all great for different reasons. And its a constantly changing landscape. But if we had to choose a few regions as personal favorites, perhaps Burgundy, Alsace and Piedmont.
What is the best wine and food pairing youve ever had?
Again, so hard to pick just one. But a favorite for us both would be a roast chicken with lemon, garlic and rosemary paired with Raveneau Chablis Les Clos.
Classic.
What will the U.S. wine industry look like in 10 years?
We think (and we hope) that the industry will follow the current trend of less focus on massproduced, chemically-manipulated commercial wines, and more focus on small artisanal producers and organic viticulture.
