Consumer Cos Up On Mixed Holiday Signals -- Consumer Roundup
Shares of retailers and other consumer companies ticked up amid mixed signals on the holiday season.
In one sign that some retailers will face a lean holiday season, toy maker Mattel warned that its business will suffer in its busiest quarter amid lackluster demand for its brands, which include Barbie, Fisher-Price and Hot Wheels, and conservative ordering from major retailers. Mattel also said that it will likely have to write down inventory and spend heavily to offer discounts to compensate for a likely drop in gross sales of at least mid- to high-single-digit percentage points.
