Shares of retailers and other consumer companies fell amid doubts about profits from holiday shopping. By tracking the prices of certain items, Wall Street Journal reporters concluded that most of the deep discounts on toys and electronics came during the week of Thanksgiving and before, while discounts on apparel remained available until late in the season.
