The Standup Desk Revolution Continues

Did anyone else see this recent Fast Company articleabout schools installing standingdesks for kids? It makes all the sense in the world that the latest wave in healthywork environments should apply to growing kids, too. Standing desks provide avaluable assist in fighting childhood obesity, and help fidgety kids focusbetter in the classroom – and that’s on top of the long-term health benefitsadults enjoy when they shift from sitting to standing most of the day.I’m a long-time advocate for standing desks, as I’ve blogged numerous times before. Always a fidgetykid, unsurprisingly I grew into a fidgety adult – so standing calms me down andhelps me focus on the work in front of me. As a CEO and leader of people, I’vealways preferred managing by walking around – an approach that will keep you onyour feet most of the working day. Try getting in and out of a chair 30 timesdaily, and your back will tell you exactly why it makes more sense just tostand as a default.I’m proud to say that, with our recent move to biggerCharlotte offices, more of the TradeKing team has joined “Team Standup.” Rich Hagen, CEOof TradeKing Advisors, has switched to a stand-up desk (pictured above),and Phil Claxton, our chief compliance officer, has gone hybrid with anadjustable sit-or-stand desk. We’ve also made a point of including standingtables with optional stools in various meeting places throughout the new space,in the hopes that standing will enliven conversations and get folks’ bestthoughts flowing. It’s interesting, actually: now that it’s standard to includewhiteboards in all conference rooms, at least one person winds up standingduring meetings just to scrawl notes on the board. Why not get everybody off oftheir feet and actively engaged, right?Be Good,Don MontanaroCEO, TradeKing Groupwww.tradeking.comFollow Don on Twitter and hone your skills at TradeKing All-Stars.
