US stocks finish a second week higher; General Electric soars after announcing sale

U.S. stocks are ending with solid gains, giving the market its second weekly advance in a row.

General Electric soared 11 percent Friday, the most in the Dow Jones industrial average, after the company said it would sell most of its financial services arm.

The Dow rose 98 points, or 0.6 percent, to 18,057.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 10 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,102. The Nasdaq composite increased 21 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,995.

AngioDynamics sank 9 percent after the medical device maker posted disappointing results and lowered its expectations for its full fiscal year.

The price of oil rose 85 cents to close at $51.64 a barrel in New York.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.95 percent.
