Vivendi confirms offer for French video sharing website Dailymotion

French media conglomerate Vivendi has confirmed an offer to Orange, the former France Telecom, for the online video sharing platform Dailymotion.

Vivendi confirmed Tuesday it had made an offer for Dailymotion, a smaller YouTube rival. The brief statement released no details.

Orange, which is still partially owned by the government, has been looking for a buyer for Dailymotion, while the government itself has been pressing for the company to remain in French hands.

The government blocked Yahoo from buying the site two years ago, saying its ownership stake gave it the right to overrule a deal it described as unfair.
