New England casino plans go ahead, gambling houses shore up business as rivalries build

A casino arms race is ramping up in New England.

Lawmakers from Connecticut to Maine have introduced bills to expand their residents' gambling options.

Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun and other gambling houses are making moves to shore up business as MGM, Wynn and other new rivals prepare to open enter the market.

Casino experts say it's too soon to say how the region's casino landscape will shake out. What's clear is New England casinos will increasingly be fighting over smaller shares of the economic pie.

Other analysts suggest there's still room for growth in the broader Northeast region, where casinos are opening faster than other parts of the country.

The industry group American Gaming Association is also pushing back against the notion that the dense, compact Northeast is oversaturated.
