Parliament elects new governor for Albania's central bank following missing money scandal

Albania's parliament has elected a new governor for the central Bank of Albania, a post that had remained vacant for months after millions of dollars from the bank's reserves went missing.

Parliament said Friday that lawmakers voted 105-3, with four abstentions, late Thursday night to nominate Gent Sejko to the post. His predecessor Ardian Fullani was arrested and fired in September, two months after the money was discovered to be missing.

Sejko, 45, has been working as deputy manager of the local branch of the private Paris-based Societe Generale bank in the Albanian capital Tirana.

About 20 former central bank employees including Fullani have been charged with abuse of post and profiting from the theft. Bank executive Elisabeta Gjoni has been serving as acting governor in the interim.
