Gov. Cuomo expected to lay out education plans in combined budget and State of State addresses

More than 80 state lawmakers have joined a long list of advocates urging New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to include a big boost in spending among any education proposals he lays out in his combined budget and State of the State address.

A letter from the legislators delivered Tuesday seeks a $2.2 billion increase in education funding. The policymaking Board of Regents has recommended a $2 billion increase.

Cuomo has been promising an aggressive education reform agenda as he begins his second term but has yet to reveal specifics. He is widely expected to seek changes to a teacher evaluation system that he believes passes too many teachers, and he has shown interest in adjusting or raising the cap on charter schools.

The joint addresses will occur Wednesday.
