US stock indexes open higher a day after the biggest drop in two months

U.S. stocks are opening slightly higher as the market bounces back from its biggest drop since October.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 75 points, or 0.4 percent, to 17,607 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time Thursday. The Dow fell 268 points the day before, its worst drop in two months.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 12 points, or 0.6 percent, to 2,039. The Nasdaq composite rose 31 points, or 0.7 percent, to 4,715.

The price of oil fell 23 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $60.70 a barrel in New York. Crude is trading at a five-year low.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note edged up to 2.18 percent.
