Vermont's only floating bridge, over Brookfield's Sunset Lake, is getting an overhaul

Vermont officials say the state's only floating bridge is getting a well-needed overhaul.

The bridge, in Brookfield over Sunset Lake, dates back to the 19th century.

The most recent version of the bridge was built in 1936 and reconstructed in 1978.

But visit Sunset Lake now, and you will find only cranes and construction workers.

Over time, the bridge's flotation system began to fail, causing it to become partially submerged. Because of that, the bridge has been closed to traffic since 2008.

Construction crews cleared the old bridge and plan to have a new, more durable floating bridge ready for cars and pedestrians by next summer.

The state is spending $2.4 million on the replacement.
