American Express Creating Facebook Messenger Bot

American Express wants to make it easier for you to keep tabs on your account by bringing purchase notifications to a platform you probably already use: Facebook Messenger.

The credit card brand is working with Facebook on a new bot for Messenger that will deliver real-time notifications about customers' purchases as well as information about their card benefits and services. American Express plans to launch a pilot for the Messenger bot "in the coming months."

So, say you purchase an airline ticket from Las Vegas to New York City. After doing so, you'd receive a notification about the purchase in Messenger, along with information about how to access the airport lounge and some restaurant recommendations.

"As a long-time partner of Facebook, we're thrilled to be working together to create an innovative experience for our card members on Messenger," American Express Vice President of digital partnerships and development Dave Wolf said in a statement. "We know our card members appreciate the convenience of receiving information from Amex on digital platforms where they're already spending time."

Meanwhile, Facebook's vice president of messaging products, David Marcus, said a "growing group of businesses and brands" are currently exploring bots for Messenger.

"We believe that people will value the ease and convenience of being able to view their purchases and key benefits … and we look forward to sharing how American Express is bringing this innovative new experience to life," Marcus said.

In the meantime, another bot hit Facebook Messenger this week with the goal of helping to uplift your mood. Dubbed Shine, the bot delivers "daily tips for self-fulfillment" right to your phone, Monday through Friday at around 8:15 a.m. local time.
