BitTorrent Sync Now a Separate, Enterprise-Focused Biz

BitTorrent's 3-year-old Sync service is leaving the nest and changing its name. Going forward, Sync will be an enterprise-focused product known as Resilio Connect, operating separately from BitTorrent.

When it launched in 2013, Sync was seen as a Dropbox competitor, allowing users to synchronize personal files across multiple devices.

After operating in tandem for a few years, BitTorrent co-CEO Robert Delamar said in a Thursday statement that "the company would be much stronger, and would unlock tremendous shareholder value, if we were to split the company into distinct consumer media and enterprise businesses."

Former BitTorrent CEO Eric Klinker will be in charge of Resilio because it's "the business that he [knows] best: B2B," Delamar wrote. "Jeremy and I are likewise doing the same in the consumer media space."

"There is untapped potential in peer-to-peer technology throughout the modern enterprise. The challenges our customers face can only be solved by a new way of thinking," Klinker wrote in a blog post. "Sync has led the charge and our technology has already unlocked tremendous value inside some of the most demanding environments on the planet.

"The protocols and architectures that brought us to this point are no longer capable of effectively transporting the heavy data loads required of them and can no longer reliably scale into the future," Klinker said. "We're excited to expand the Sync mission and to bring this great technology to more of these core users."

Interested users can sign up online to request a free trial of Resilio Connect.
