Glassdoor Helping Americans Get On-the-Job Training

With 8.6 million Americans unemployed, finding work is still a challenge. In fact, last year, President Obama said America needs a better job training system to help people learn the right skills, in order to fill the jobs employers need.

To help, Glassdoor, the jobs and recruiting site, has launched On-the-Job Training (OJT) Finder, a new interactive job search mapping tool, allowing people to find on-the-job training career opportunities, such as apprenticeships and trainee positions.

“The new On-the-Job Training tool from Glassdoor gives job seekers an easy way to find the jobs they need to advance their careers,” said Robert Hohman, co-founder and CEO of Glassdoor. “These opportunities allow people to learn new skills, or start an entirely new career, while getting paid.”

Using the OJT Finder, you can easily see how many on-the-job training, apprenticeship or trainee opportunities are available near you by searching for a specific city within the interactive map. This makes it easier to search for trainee positions near home or within a reasonable driving distance. You can see current openings for your location, including companies hiring for each role with details on requirements and how to apply. Some companies with the most on-the-job training opportunities available are Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Walmart, CVS Health, Hertz and Sears.

Right now, there are nearly 70,000 on-the-job training positions* being advertised by employers in all 50 states that range in experience requirements. Some of the most in-demand positions that offer on-the-job training include Sales Manager Trainee (2,800 jobs), Store Manager Trainee (2,300 jobs), Bus Driver Trainee (1,200 jobs), Pharmacy Trainee (1,000 jobs) and Mechanic Trainee (600 jobs). These on-the-job training positions range in base salary from $20,000 to more than $60,000, according to Glassdoor. In fact, several of these positions pay $50,000 or more, already more than what the average American worker earns per year ($47,230). Glassdoor also says that cities like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas offer several hundred of these positions.

“With millions of Americans out of work, we believe this tool will help address our country’s skills gap and match the right job seekers with the right employers,” adds Hohman.

This tool was announced today in tandem with the White House Upskill America event. Glassdoor’s CEO Robert Hohman joins Vice President Joe Biden and 150 employers, unions, joint ventures, academic institutions and technology providers to highlight career advancement programs that help lower-level, front-line workers develop new skills that can help them move into higher paying, more senior roles.
