Samsung Internet TVs to use its own Tizen operating system from this year

Samsung Electronics Co. says all of its Internet-connected televisions will this year use its internally developed operating system known as Tizen.

The company said Tuesday the first Tizen-equipped smart TVs will be unveiled next week at a trade show in Las Vegas.

The move is Samsung's latest attempt to boost its software power, which the industry sees as the company's weakness.

Samsung, which relies on Android for most of its mobile devices, last year postponed the launch of smartphones using Tizen. Instead, it used Tizen in the Gear series of smartwatches.

It said Tizen-based televisions will synchronize with Samsung mobile devices to share content. It will also serve as center for Internet-connected homes where residents can remotely control electronics and lighting.
