Even banks need a day off every now and then. Knowing what days your bank is closed can help you plan ahead and avoid unnecessary trips to the bank.

Here’s a complete list of days when banks are closed and advice on paying bills and accessing cash during a bank holiday.

When are banks closed in 2024?

Most banks follow the Federal Reserve’s calendar, which includes 11 federal holidays. Here’s a rundown of the holiday bank schedule for 2024.

Holiday
Date
New Year’s Day
January 1
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
January 15
President’s Day
February 19
Memorial Day
May 27
Juneteenth National Independence Day
June 19
Independence Day (Fourth of July)
July 4
Labor Day
September 2
Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day
October 14
Veterans Day
November 11
Thanksgiving
November 28
Christmas
December 25

If a federal holiday falls on a Sunday, the bank will be closed the following Monday. For example, if Independence Day lands on a Sunday, banks are closed on July 5. In 2024, that isn’t a concern: No federal holidays fall on Sundays this year.

Banks will close their physical branches or have modified hours on a bank holiday. Customer service hours may also change, depending on your bank. Some banks will have their own holidays, so you should check your bank’s website for more information.

What if you bank exclusively online? While most online banks don’t have physical locations, some may still observe a bank holiday. This means they won’t process transactions until the next day.

What holidays are banks open?

Just because you’re celebrating a holiday doesn’t mean your bank is closed. Many holidays don’t come with bank closures, including Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, Good Friday, Halloween, Rosh Hashanah, and Kwanzaa.

In most cases, you can expect your bank to be open on these days, with regular business hours.

Can I pay a bill on a bank holiday?

Bank holidays won’t impact your ability to log into your online account. But they're essential to know when making sure your bills are paid on time.

Most banks treat transactions made on a bank holiday the same way as if the transaction happened over the weekend. They'll typically process the transaction on the next business day.

For example, if you tried to pay a bill, transfer funds, or deposit a check on May 27 (Memorial Day), it wouldn’t go through until May 28.

If your bills are set to auto-pay, some banks may process the transaction ahead of time to account for the holiday, says Sonia Fraher, senior director of product and strategy at Ally Financial. But it’s important to check with your bank to avoid getting hit with a late fee.

If you need to make a payment ASAP, you can often pay directly to the provider online or by phone. Fortunately, most providers accept bill payments the next day after a holiday.

Can I withdraw cash on a bank holiday?

If you need to take out cash on a bank holiday, don’t fret.

While branches are closed, ATMs that aren’t physically located in the branch typically work 24/7. This includes drive-up ATMs and those in third-party locations like convenience stores. Consider using an in-network ATM (if possible) to avoid fees.

Can I cash a check on a bank holiday?

While you may not be able to cash a check at a branch during a bank holiday, several other options exist.

You can use mobile check deposit to cash your check using your phone. Some ATMs also let you cash or deposit checks, depending on your bank. You may also be able to use a check cashing store, many of which will be open during the holidays.

Your money may not be available until your bank processes the funds, likely the next business day.

The bottom line

Banks have made it easier than ever to manage your money without ever visiting a branch. But there are still some scenarios when you might need to visit a branch or speak to a customer service representative. Be sure to keep bank holidays in mind to plan for potential disruptions proactively.
