How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared Tuesday

The U.S. stock market ended slightly lower Tuesday, avoiding the sharp declines that occurred in Europe and Asia thanks to a rally in beaten-down energy companies. Energy shares rebounded after the price of oil bounced back from a five-year low.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 51 points, or 0.3 percent, to 17,801.20.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.49 of a point, or 0.02 percent, to 2,059.82

The Nasdaq composite rose 25.77 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,766.47.

For the week:

The Dow is down 157.59 points, or 0.9 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 15.55 points, or 0.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 14.29 points, or 0.3 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,224.54 points, or 7.4 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 211.46 points, or 11.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 589.88 points, or 14.1 percent.
