Longtime Giants quarterback broke older brother Peyton's earnings record

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will retire from the NFL on Friday, ending his football career as the top-earning player in league history.

The longtime NFL quarterback earned an unprecedented $252 million in salary during his 16-year NFL career, according to Spotrac. In 2019, he shattered the NFL’s all-time career earning record established by his older brother, former quarterback Peyton Manning, who retired in 2016 with roughly $249 million in career earnings.

"We are proud to have called Eli Manning our quarterback for so many years," said Steve Tisch, Giants chairman and executive vice president. "Eli was driven to always do what was best for the team. Eli leaves a timeless legacy with two Super Bowl titles on the field and his philanthropic work off the field, which has inspired and impacted so many people."

The Manning brothers have developed a reputation as among the NFL’s most marketable stars of the last two decades. Eli Manning earned $7 million from endorsement deals with blue-chip companies such as Pepsi-owned Gatorade, DirecTV, Nationwide Insurance and Visa in the 12 months ending in June 2018, according to Forbes.

Manning ranked 68th on Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid athletes in 2018, though he dropped off the list in 2019.

Manning’s NFL earnings record won’t last for long. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers have all earned $233 million or more in salary and should surpass Manning after the 2020 season.
