Honda Recalls Nearly 46K Fit Cars in U.S., Canada

Honda Motor (NYSE:HMC) said Monday it is recalling nearly 46,000 Fit Sport vehicles in the U.S. and Canada to fix a problem with their electronic stability control systems.

The Japanese automaker said the problem could cause the vehicles to tilt excessively on sharp turns and lose tire traction, increasing the risk of an accident. The issue was discovered by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In the U.S., the recall affects 43,782 Fit Sport cars from model years 2012 and 2013. Another 2,000 will be recalled in Canada.

Honda said it will begin notifying owners on May 17. Dealers will update the ESC software for free.

No accidents or injuries related to the ESC issue have occurred, according to Honda.

Shares of Honda closed Friday at $40.39 and were inactive in pre-market trading.

Another Japanese automaker, Nissan, also announced a recall on Monday.

Nissan said it is recalling up to 123,308 Altima cars from model year 2013 to address a potential problem with their spare tires, which may have been significantly over- or under-inflated.

The recall is expected to start on May 3. Nissan dealers will inspect the spare tires and adjust the pressure if necessary.
