EU Unveils Sweeping Reforms to Airline-Passengers Rights

The European Union has proposed sweeping changes to airline-passenger rights in the biggest overhaul since rules were first introduced eight years ago.The EU's transport chief, Sim Kallas, in Brussels on Wednesday said the reforms were designed to bring legal certainty for passengers, amid frequent complaints that carriers try to avoid their obligations by forcing customers to haul them through the courts to obtain compensation.European airlines have for their part also lobbied for changes after being forced to fork out hundreds of millions of euros in compensation following the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano in April 2010. The billowing volcanic ash cloud resulted in millions of passengers being stranded across Europe as thousands of flights were grounded for nearly a week."It's bad enough if you are travelling on business. But if it's the holiday time and you've got a young family with you, it quickly turns into a nightmare," Mr. Kallas said during a press conference....
