Edison International (EIX) could decide by the end of 2013 whether or not to permanently shut down its California nuclear power plant, Edison's top executive said Tuesday.Edison's faces uncertainty and potential costs associated with the troubled San Onofre nuclear power plant, which has been shut since January 2012 due to equipment problems.The company's Southern California Edison utility, which operates the plant, has asked federal nuclear regulators for permission to restart one of the plant's reactors at partial power to determine whether it can be operated safely with adjustments.The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is still considering that request.Edison Chief Executive Ted Craver said Tuesday that it could "take time" before the company obtains approval to partially restart the nuclear unit.
