Austria in Spotlight Over Bank Secrecy

Austria found itself under pressure to ease its strict banking secrecy laws on Thursday, a day after Luxembourg said it would share information with other European Union members about bank accounts held by EU citizens.French Budget Minister Bernard Cazeneuve warned that his country may blacklist Austria, the last EU member not to agree to an automatic exchange of bank account information to combat tax evasion."It is not normal that countries like Austria for instance don't share information on [bank] accounts held there by European Union citizens," Mr. Cazeneuve said on French radio. "If these countries do not cooperate, if there is not a convention covering an information exchange that allows for total transparency within the European Union, these countries expose themselves to the risk of appearing on the list of noncooperative states."Mr. Cazeneuve's remarks came one day after French President Francois Hollande vowed to crack down on tax havens.
