What was supposed to be a nation-wide, 24-hour strike in Chile's copper mines Tuesday turned into industrial action only at state copper giant Corporacion Nacional del Cobre's eight divisions, halting production of some 4,600 metric tons of copper, according to government estimates.Chile is the world's largest copper producer, with an annual production of around 5.5 million metric tons, or roughly a third of global output. Codelco, as the state company is known, is the world's biggest copper mining firm, accounting for about 11% of global production.As a result of the labor stoppage at Codelco, copper for May delivery rose 7.05 cents, or 2.1%, to settle at $3.4415 a pound on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange Tuesday.Codelco workers unionized under the Federation of Copper Workers umbrella labor group called for the nation-wide walkout to protest what they call unmet demands regarding changes to local labor laws, the private pension fund system, Codelco's health car...
