Officials Want 'Kill Switch' on Smartphones to Deter Theft

Smartphone makers should develop a "kill switch" that would disable a stolen mobile device in order to deter theft, according to a group of the nation's prosecutors and law-enforcement officials.New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon are leading the effort to push the cell phone industry to tame an epidemic of mobile theft.The group, which also includes an array of state prosecutors, city officials and police chiefs from around the country, promised to analyze "how the economics of device theft have affected decision-making by the smartphone industry" and said it would investigate impropriety by manufacturers where appropriate.In an attempt to ratchet up pressure further, the group also is working with state and city comptrollers, who steer the investments of major pension funds.As part of the effort, New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli is urging tech companies Apple Inc.
