Aurizon Inks Rail, Port Infrastructure Deal with GVK Hancock

An Indian conglomerate's plans to open up a new coal-mining province in northeastern Australia has secured the backing of Aurizon Holdings Ltd. (AZJ.AU), the nation's largest rail freight operator.Aurizon said Monday it has agreed to acquire a majority interest in rail and port projects planned by India's GVK Group and billionaire Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd., which aim to link Queensland state's Galilee Basin with Abbot Point, Australia's most northerly coal port.Construction of a new terminal at the port and a rail line to connect it with the GVK Hancock venture's planned Alpha, Kevin's Corner and Alpha West coal mines is estimated to cost 6 billion Australian dollars (US$6.13 billion).The exact terms of the deal are yet to be finalized, and it needs third party approvals and satisfactory due diligence to progress, the companies said in a joint statement.Aurizon plans to take a 51% interest in Hancock Coal Infrastructure Pty.
