H-P Share Gain Biggest Since Nov. 2001

Hewlett-Packard Co. shares soared 17.1% to close at $24.86 on Thursday, posting its biggest one-day gain in about 12 years. The last time H-P's stock rose by that much was Nov. 6, 2001 after the family of co-founder Bill Hewlett, led by then director Walter Hewlett, came out against a proposed merger with Compaq Computer.
