EU Kroes: Eyeing EUR100 billion Private Investment for Chips, Semiconductors

Europe should make cheaper, faster and smarter microchips in order to compete globally, European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes said when announcing European Union funding for research and development in the sector Thursday."We can even produce closer to 20% amount of global production, more than on U.S. soil, but only if we get our act together," she told reporters. "If we don't take the opportunity, others will leapfrog us."Ms. Kroes wants to coordinate public investment in micro- and nano-electronics, such as semiconductors and computer chips. Used in everything from cars to smartphones, the market for electronics has grown by 5% a year since 2000.The commission's strategy includes contributing EUR1.5 billion from EU funds, and likely double that from EU member states.
