Airbus A350 Nears Key Electrical Tests

Airbus plans to reach a key milestone for its new A350 as early as Wednesday by starting the jet's onboard auxiliary power unit for the first time, according to two people familiar with the company's planning.The tests on the power unit supplied by Honeywell Inc. (HON) would allow Airbus to evaluate the aircraft's electrical systems, and may be followed later this week by the first engine start.Executives at Airbus' parent, European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. (EADSY, EAD.FR), said Tuesday that the A350 program remains "challenging" as it tries to avoid further delays to its target of flying the jet for the first time by the middle of the year, ahead of the scheduled first delivery to launch customer Qatar Airways in the second half of 2014.Airbus rolled out the first painted A350 this week, and the jet is undergoing electrical tests inside a hangar at the company's Toulouse facility in southern France ahead of the planned start-up of the power unit.The first start of the jet's twin...
